Exploring the world in style and comfort just got more enticing.
Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) has launched another success story with the Darwin 86 Alexa, the seventh vessel in this series to hit the water. The Darwin Class is known for its distinct character, innovative design, and technical prowess, and the Alexa continues that tradition with some impressive enhancements tailored for adventurous owners looking to explore remote regions.
A Brief History of the Darwin 86
The Darwin 86 Alexa is the latest in a line of explorer yachts from CdM, a shipyard that’s made a name for itself since it started in 2010. Since then, twelve Darwins ranging from 86 to 112 feet have been delivered or are nearing completion. These yachts are renowned for their seaworthiness and robust construction, traits that have made the Darwin series a benchmark in the explorer yacht market.
Vasco Buonpensiere, CdM’s co-founder and CEO, sums it up well: “Good enough is never sufficient, especially for long-distance, adventurous cruising.” That philosophy is evident in every detail of Alexa, from her redundant systems and spacious engine rooms to her efficient fuel consumption and impressive range.
Design and Construction
At the heart of Alexa’s design is Hydro Tec’s unmistakable aesthetic, which has been responsible for the exterior and naval architecture. But it’s not just about looks—this explorer yacht is built to travel thousands of miles a year, and that requires a serious focus on the technical aspects.
Alexa's hull and rudders have been designed with enhanced scantlings, making them capable of handling icy conditions at the highest latitudes. The Upper deck stern terrace, normally constructed from aluminium, has been built from steel for added strength. Additionally, the yacht features heated floors and an enclosed cockpit, ensuring comfort even when cruising in low temperatures.
The yacht’s propulsion comes from twin Man engines, each delivering 500hp. This setup ensures reliability and the power needed for long voyages across varying sea conditions.
Interior Design
Floris Design, a long-time collaborator with CdM, handled the interiors. Pierluigi Floris notes that the owner wanted a yacht that was practical and functional without sacrificing elegance or comfort. The result is a warm, earthy palette that creates a relaxed yet refined atmosphere throughout the yacht.
Alexa can accommodate up to nine guests in four cabins located on the Lower Deck. The spa area features a sauna, shower, and relaxation space, which can be converted into a private area connected to the owner’s cabin via a sliding door. This flexibility is a testament to the customisation that has gone into Alexa’s design.
On the social front, the Main and Upper decks feature bespoke furniture complemented by pieces from renowned manufacturers. The crew quarters are strategically placed on the Main deck, forward of the galley and crew mess, with direct access to the wheelhouse on the Upper deck via a dedicated staircase.
One particularly unique request from the owner was for a fourth pilot station on the Sun deck and two additional fridges for storing garbage during long passages—details that highlight the yacht’s suitability for extended cruising.
