Embarking on a new build is the ultimate expression of freedom on the water, but choosing the right shipyard is the most critical decision you will make. Over years of reviewing yachts and interviewing industry experts, I have encountered hundreds of builders, and only a select few consistently deliver true standout quality.

This is not an exhaustive directory. These are shipyards I have featured on my YouTube channel and written about in my newsletter, chosen because their engineering and design genuinely stood out when I visited. I am not paid by any of them. If you are ready to turn a vision into a vessel, these are the teams I would start with.

About the yardDutch yard in Aalst with roots in 1972 GRP work built to superyacht standards. The first Elling, the E3, launched in 1997, and the long-range E4 followed in 2004. In 2014 Elling put a production E4 through a full 360-degree capsize test, and she self-righted. Today it builds the E4 and the 65ft E6.

About the yardFamily-run Dutch yard in Groningen, born in 1996 from watching a KNRM lifeboat punch through a storm. Deep-V hulls, Corten steel below the waterline, aluminium above, built to commercial rather than pleasure-craft standards. Over 50 vessels since 1999, now run by the founder’s sons.

About the yardIrish yard at Youghal, County Cork, founded in 1998 by Frank Kowalski. Made its name building pilot boats, patrol craft and search and rescue vessels in composite, and now applies that sea-keeping to yachts. Multiple UIM world records with the Thunder Child hulls.
